The Royal Jester

The Royal Jester is a familiar figure, appearing across cultures and eras. Also known as a joker, the jester was a figure who entertained the royal court in exchange for a required degree of protection and freedom. He used wit, satire, and comedy to comment on current events or persons, often in ways that could be harmful to others. He risked being harsh and attacking, but he exercised a great degree of freedom in criticizing authorities and customs.

Our Jester draws on the traditional Venetian Jester as well as the traditions of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, which featured distinctive figures in colorful costumes, distinctive hats with bells, and scepters with carved heads – masks. Our Royal Jester brings all this into the realities of the 21st century - he is both a memory of the past and a pantomime commentator of our reality, of what is happening around him - he is vigilant, present, exists, he will interact and, above all, hidden behind a mask - he clowns on ;)
